Our office hours are Monday -Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am- 4pm. (A confidential answerphone is available at all other times).
When you contact us you will be offered a first appointment with a counsellor. This appointment, which we call an ‘Assessment’ and lasts for up to one hour. The appointment allows you to learn a little bit more about what Relate can offer you and it enables our counsellor to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing and decide with you whether Relate counselling would be an appropriate form of help. If we decide that we are not the right agency for you, we will always try to suggest a useful alternative.
If you decide that you would like to go on to a course of counselling, you will be asked to join our waiting list. If you are available to attend for an appointment at any time, and do not have any special requirements you will normally be seen quickly. If you have limited availability, or special requirements which mean that we need to refer you to an experienced or specially trained counsellor, then you may need to wait longer.
How Much Does it Cost?
We are a charity and we don’t make any profit from the services we provide. We aim to support everybody who comes to us for help. Each counselling hour costs us £55 and we ask clients to pay towards their counselling sessions to recover this cost.
Please ask our appointments team if you are experiencing financial difficulties. Help may be available in the form of reduced cost appointments or bursary funding.
You may also be able to access free counselling funded through Relate’s partnerships with National Benevolent Organisations.
Please ask to be referred to Relate Birmingham. As soon as we receive your referral, we will be in contact to book your appointment.
Our current charges are as follows:
Adult Relationship or Family Counselling or Sex Therapy
The initial consultation appointment is £35.
The cost of ongoing appointments is on a sliding scale based on your income and what you can afford. The range is between £35 and £65. You can discuss this with the counsellor at our appointment.
We understand some people can’t afford £55 and will agree a lower payment. If you can pay more than £55 you are helping others who can’t afford it.

Children & Young People’s Counselling
We ask parents or carers to contribute towards the cost of the counselling sessions for children and young people based on what you can afford.
We ask for £35 for the initial assessment appointment. The cost of ongoing appointments is on a sliding scale between £35 and £65.
We know cost can be an issue and some parents/carers may find it difficult to contribute at all. Due to ongoing support from local funders, we are currently able to provide free sessions to children and young people who need them. Please contact us for more information.
How you pay for Counselling
When the appointment is booked you will also be asked to pay the required amount in advance. When you are offered an appointment for ongoing counselling we will ask you to make a payment in advance to secure the appointment. We use Worldpay to take payments securely. When you attend your first counselling session, we ask you to pay the receptionist for your second session, and so on. The last time you attend the Centre, therefore, no payment will be due.
We do not have any childcare facilities and so please do not bring any children with you unless they are attending the sessions.
