Improving Child and Family Arrangements (ICFA)

When families face challenges in agreeing on child arrangements, Cafcass is here to help. Through a referral from the Family Court, families can access our ICFA service – designed to support safe, positive, and lasting arrangements that put children’s well-being first.

Improving Child and Family Arrangements (ICFA)

ICFA is a short-term, court-ordered service provided in private law cases. It focuses on four key outcomes for families:

Reducing barriers and resistance to agreeing arrangements while managing any risks to ensure these arrangements are safe.
Promoting positive communication within families.
Ensuring children’s wishes and feelings are heard and considered.
Helping families agree on a Parenting Plan to avoid future conflicts.

How Does ICFA Work?

The ICFA service is tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each family. It incorporates learning from the Separated Parents Information Programme and takes place over a few weeks. Activities may include:

  • Meetings with parents, together and/or individually, to resolve issues and prepare them for spending time with their children.
  • Direct work with children to help them feel ready and comfortable about spending time with the parent.
  • Observing time spent between the parent and child in various settings, such as a contact centre, home, or community.

Who Can Access ICFA?

ICFA referrals are funded by Cafcass and are available only through court orders. This service is offered at no cost to parents. ICFA is provided in community settings across Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, South Staffordshire, and Solihull.
